Pls. help how to recognize whether the sentence want to emphasize the event or the extintions.

I do not think one of these choices is the correct one. Can you post the rest of the choices?
I think the main subject of the sentence is "an asteroid slammed into NA" and my guess is that the main sentence should be "an asteroid slammed into NA marks the end of the geological era". However, it is best to see the rest of the choices to determine.

D looks better than E. It is the event that marks the end of geological era.

I vote for E too. In D, "it" is not correctly used. If it is "An asteroid" that "marks the end of...", then "it" should be removed.
For E, "mark" is the verb for "the plant and animal extinctions", not for "an event".
