I think "they did" would have been perfect .... but the actual answer is E and no explanations were given...

My bad

This is not an "of" construction to ignore part of sentence

Moreover, I thought workers is object in the sentence where as
old man & workers are subject of the sentence, so they is the apposite pronoun

A) The old geezer aggravated his younger counterparts by consistently producing more work than them.

B) The old geezer aggravated the younger counterparts by consistently producing more work than they.

C) The old geezer irritated the younger workers by consistently producing more work than them.

D) The old man irritated his younger workers by consistently producing more work than them.

E) The old man irritated his younger workers by consistently producing more work than they.

they makes sense

them does not
