Hi,
Can anybody explain to me the differences among the listed three sentences (especially the verb part)?
- They recognized that the entrance fee was a bargain.
- They recognized the entrance fee to be a bargain.
- They recognized the entrance fee as a bargain.
I feel like it is something to do with the subjunctive, but I am not quite sure.
Thank you in advance.
Sally
Let me give a try.
- They recognized that the entrance fee
was a bargain.: Here usage of that indicates subjunctive verb is involved in the statement. In case of subjunctive verb, the main verb to be indicated in 'be' form or 'to form or plural form. So, correct usage must be 'were, not was.
- They recognized the entrance fee
to be a bargain. : As I mentioned above, this sentence seems incorrect because here that is not used. In addition to that either to (infinitive) form with verb or be form.
- They recognized the entrance fee
as a bargain.: As can be used to compare x with y or as a function/role. Logically, entrance fee can not act as a bargain. So, it's incorrect.
