Yes, some GMAT tutors mention to see if the -ing verb makes sense with the subject/doer and connects with the phrase, else that sentence is wrong. But i have seen a lot of official questions, where both the above rules are not followed.
In that case, trust your own observations, and if you feel the need to ask for clarification on any of those official questions, bring up the point in the forum. (Just because there is a tag next to my name, you cannot take everything I may say as gospel. I make mistakes, and so do other Experts.)
