The 4 known elements of Set S are -4 , 0 , 1 , 17
(1) x > 1
Median will be 1
Sufficient

(2) x < 2
If x is between 1 and 2 , then median will be 1
but if x is less than 1 , then median will not be 1 .( Value of median now will depend whether x lies between 0 and 1 or 0 and -4 or is less than -4 ).
If x= -5 , median will be 0 .
If x= .5 , median will be .5

Not sufficient

S contains the elements {– 4, x, 0, 17, 1}
in ascending order S contains the elements {– 4, 0,1,x, 17}e elements {– 4, x, 0, 17, 1}
1) x>1

in this case Median = 3rd term =1 ..S

2) x<2..

as now median will depend on x.. not sure abt specific value..NS

The set S contains the elements {–4, x, 0, 17, 1}. What is the median of set S?

(1) x > 1

(2) x < 2

Can someone explain this question?

I am confused by the fact that Set must contain only distinct numbers......

Thanks in advance.

Merging topics. Please refer to the discussion above.

To answer your doubt: yes, mathematically a set consists of only distinct elements. That's why real/official GMAT questions use word "list" instead, which can contain same elements. This is not a perfect question in this sense.

S = {– 4, x, 0, 17, 1}
Lets try to arrange the digits.
-4, 0, 1, 17 ....... x

Option 1 : x>1, so arrangement becomes -4, 0,1 ,x ,17
So median = 1
SUFFICIENT

Option 2: x <2,
case 1: x = 1 -4,0 , 1, 1, 17 ...... median = 1
case 2: x =0 -4,0, 0, 1, 17 ........median = 0
case 3: -4=< x <0 -4, x, 0, 1, 17 .............median = 0
Case 4,: x <-4 , x, -4, 0, 1,17 .............median = 0
NOT SUFFICIENT
