What is the reason for using "As well as" here? Doesn't it make the sentence more wordy?

Can someone explain y b is incorrect?

Usage of 'reason' in the non-underlined portion of the construction makes 'because' redundant.

Several employees of Company X believe that the reason that sales are alarmingly declining is that the design department knows little about marketing and strategy.

A. that sales are alarmingly declining is that the design department knows little about marketing and strategy

B. that sales are alarmingly declining is because the design department knows little about marketing and strategy

C. for the alarming decline in sales is that the design department knows little about marketing and strategy

D. that sales are alarmingly declining is that the design department knows little about marketing as well as strategy

E. that sales are declining alarmingly is that the design departments knows little about strategy and marketing

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Several employees of Company X believe that the reason that sales are alarmingly declining is that the design department knows little about marketing and strategy.

A. that sales are alarmingly declining is that the design department knows little about marketing and strategy

Incorrect.

While this answer choice is grammatically correct, it is stylistically flawed.

The phrase sales are alarmingly declining is wordy and awkward. Look for an answer choice that is stylistically superior.

B. that sales are alarmingly declining is because the design department knows little about marketing and strategy

This answer choice repeats the original stylistic mistake and adds another stylistic flaw. Using both The reason and is because in the same sentence is redundant.

What help us identify this mistake is the following Stop Sign: The reason + because

C. for the alarming decline in sales is that the design department knows little about marketing and strategy

This answer choice corrects the original stylistic flaw. Replacing the wordy and awkward verbal phrase sales are alarmingly declining with the simpler noun phrase alarming decline in sales improves the sentence's style and effectiveness of expression.

D. that sales are alarmingly declining is that the design department knows little about marketing as well as strategy

While this answer choice is grammatically correct, it is stylistically flawed. Replacing the single word and with the three-word phrase as well as creates redundancy.

What helps us identify this mistake is the following Stop Sign: as well as

E. that sales are declining alarmingly is that the design departments knows little about strategy and marketing

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect.

The corrected sentence changes the singular department to the plural form departments.

The lesson to be learned here is the importance of paying close attention to details in the answer choices.

Do not assume that the only thing that changes in the answer choices is the part which was flawed in the original sentence. Different answer choices can make changes in various parts of the sentence.

The change in the corrected sentence creates two problems.

The first is grammatical - a Subject Verb Disagreement: the plural subject departments does not agree with the singular verb knows.

The second problem is a change in meaning. In the original sentence, there is one design department whereas in this answer choice there are at least two.
