Shakespeare's poetry, which not only includes 154 sonnets but four narrative poems as well, are generally given less attention than they give his plays.

A. which not only includes 154 sonnets but four narrative poems as well, are generally given less attention than they give his plays
B. which include not only 154 sonnets but also four narrative poems, are generally given less attention than his plays
C. which not only include 154 sonnets but also four narrative poems as well, is generally given less attention than it gives his plays
D. which includes not only 154 sonnets but four narrative poems as well, are generally given less attention than would be his plays
E. which includes not only 154 sonnets but also four narrative poems, is generally given less attention than his plays

Magoosh Official Explanation

Split #1: the GMAT loves the construction “not only ... but also”, but does not like variants, such as “not only ... but”. Choices (A) & (D) have the latter incorrect form. Furthermore, the GMAT does not like it when we garnish the "not only … but also" construction with additional words, such as "as well" --- (A) & (C) & (D) add these words, which is why they are wrong.

Split #2: subject-verb agreement, the most basic of all grammatical issues. Subject = "Shakespeare's poetry." Yes, Mr. Shakespeare wrote a ton of poems, but the word "poetry is singular, and we need a singular verb. Choices (A) & (B) & (D) have the plural verb "are", which is incorrect.

Split #3: the comparison. Choice (A) introduces the mystery pronoun "they" (who?), and similarly, choice (C) uses the mystery pronoun "it" (what?). The GMAT hates mystery pronouns. Choice (D) strangely violates the parallelism of the comparison: the first part is factual "are generally given" while the second part "than would be his plays" is hypothetical: there is simply no reason for making one factual and one hypothetical, so (D) is wrong. Only (B) & (E) execute the comparison flawlessly.

For all these reasons, (E) is the best possible answer.
