I have been practicing for the TOEFL for about 6 months, and I just got 112 on my exam last week!!
Score breakdown:
Reading: 29
Listening: 30
Speaking: 28
Writing: 25
Here are the two sites that I used to self-learn TOEFL:
1. TOEFL Mocks (https://toeflmocks.com)Other people recommended other websites for TOEFL practices, but one immediate advantage of TOEFL Mocks over other Chinese websites is that it is in English. Before, I could only do TPO practices, but recently they've added questions from Barron's and other sources too. I would do a few section practices (focusing on reading, speaking, and writing) during the week and a full mock test on the weekend.
Note: I live in India and could access the site fine. If you're in other countries, you may need to install a VPN (there are many free ones, and Hola VPN is one of them) and change the country to India to see all the questions. Otherwise, the number of questions available is limited.
Advice:
1. Although toeflmocks is free, I recommend paying for speaking and essay grading. I got "VIP Comments" because they provide very detailed comments, like you would from a 1-on-1 TOEFL teacher, and this was very helpful in knowing my weaknesses and areas to improve. For example, writing was my weakest area, and my writing score was stuck at around 15-18 for a few months. It wasn't until I purchased a VIP comment for one of my mock tests did I realize that I was getting low scores because my structure was confusing (which obviously I didn't realize). I received comments for 5 tests in total, and in the end I was consistently getting around 25, which was also the score I received on the real test.
2. Switch to the "strict mode" while doing a full mock test. I use the regular mode to do section practices because the interface is smooth and clean, but the strict mode follows the layout and format of the real test, which helped me in getting used to the real test later on.
3. Read more than just TOEFL passages. TOEFL passages are kind of boring, to be honest (haha), so I read other science and technology news articles to help me improve on reading.
2. TOEFL Resources (https://www.toeflresources.com/)As I mentioned before, writing is my weakest subject, so I used TOEFL Resources extensively to help me improve on my writing section. The lessons break down all the different question types and the strategies that I should use to approach each one of them. This was very helpful for me.
Good luck to everyone taking the TOEFL!
