Hello!
I am applying for MBA-2022 in the US or Europe. This means that I will be applying from September 2021. I am a Research and Development Engineer at a German Automotive company(Top 5 in the world) for the past 3 years. Recently, I have been offered a similar role at a start-up that is building electric vehicles (<100 employees).
Would you recommend a job change just a year before applying? Does a start-up background add any brownie points to my profile evaluation? or does the MNC carry more value since I am involved with international customers and projects involved are at a much larger scale?
Thanks in advance for your reply!
Regards,
VK
Hey
VerbalKnight!
To answer your question succinctly, I would say that shifting to a startup during this stage in your professional journey won’t pose a problem but can end up earning you quite a few brownie points. But just like every best-selling story, the presentation of the story holds the same amount of significance as its execution.
Since you have worked for 3 years in a top company in your domain, it is safe to say that you have accumulated the kind of experience that definitely sets you at par with the competition you’d be facing while applying to an MBA program from a top B-school. Shifting to a startup during this stage in your career can play in your favour and boost your profile by adding a cross-functional understanding of business and would allow you to take up projects in which you can gauge the impact of your contributions much more easily. Moreover, a startup will also allow you to take on much more challenging roles and work in a wide range of roles which can also help you to highlight the breadth of your skillset and business acumen later on in your B-school application. So if the startup that you wish to join is providing you with the experience and the opportunity to add these aspects to your profile, then you should definitely go for it.
However, one important thing that you might be missing over here is the fact that your chances of acceptance in a B-school depend on many factors rather than just your work experience. When applying to the top B-schools, your chances of acceptance depend on various factors such as your academic background, work experience, extracurricular activities and your application documents. So to gauge where you stand amongst your competitors and how your profile ranks on these various factors, I’d suggest you take up a free profile evaluation which will give you a comprehensive score of where you rank in these aspects and how to further improve upon them. Moreover, the profile evaluation tool will also provide you with a customized list of schools that you can target based on your profile.
