Let present age of Shomi = S, current age of elder child = E, current age of younger child = Y.
From data:
S = 3 * E
=> E = S/3 ...i
S + 1 = 3 * \(\frac{(E + Y)}{2}\)
=> 3E + 3Y = 2S + 2 ...ii
E - Y = 2
=> Y = E - 2 ...iii
Using ii and iii, we get:
3E + 3 * (E - 2) = 2S + 2
=> 6E - 6 = 2S + 2
=> 6E = 2S + 8 ...iv
Using i and iv, we get:
6 * \(\frac{S}{3}\) = 2S + 8
=>2S = 2S + 8
=> 8 = 0 [which is not possible]
=> value of S cannot be determined.
So, correct answer is option E.

Let's use these two statements first: Shomi is now thrice as old as her first child. How old is Shomi now?
Pick option which is multiple of 3.
30 and 60.
Case I: If shomi is 30 then her first child is 10. Another child could be 8 or 12.
Average of both children: 8 and 10 will be 9 and 10 and 12 will be 11.
After one year, she will be thrice as old as the average of both her children: Shomi should be 9 * 3 = 27 or 11 * 3 = 33.
But if she is 30 today, after 1 year she will be 31.
Case II: If shomi is 60 then her first child is 20. Another child could be 18 or 22.
Average of both children: 18 and 20 will be 19 and 20 and 22 will be 21.
After one year, she will be thrice as old as the average of both her children: Shomi should be 19 * 3 = 57 or 21 * 3 = 63.
But if she is 60 today, after 1 year she will be 61.
