Hi All,
Need some "expert" advice. I took the GMAT last year (February 2014) and scored a dissatisfying 640 (Q38, V40, IR 7). After a year away from studying I decided to give it another go this year. I spent the last three months studying and took the test yesterday. My unofficial score is 730 (Q46, V44), but I really messed up IR. I don't know why, but I froze up on the first IR problem and ended up wasting 10 minutes. I didn't have enough time for the remaining problems in that section, so I had to do a lot of guessing. I ended up with a 3 (ouch). Knowing that I had just bombed IR I used the break before quant to give myself a little pep talk and try and calm myself down. I'm really happy that I was able to bounce back and earn a composite 730.
So here's my question- should I retake because of my horrible IR score, or will the IR 7 I received on my first attempt help mitigate the damage?
Any input is appreciated. Thanks.
Hey GHP
You don't want the admissions committee to focus on a really low IR score of like 1 or 2 -- that shows lack of effort or ability
That said, it's not that much more beneficial to have a perfect 8 versus a 6 or 7.
So ideally, you want to stay in the 4, 5, 6, or 7 range to efficiently get a score that is decent without putting a crazy amount of effort.
Now, with your IR score of 3 -- well, that's kind of cutting it. However, your 730 score is high enough that it'll offset the IR score of 3. So in your situation, I wouldn't worry about it.
