Hello, MfinStudent. For my part, I think a retake of some sort is in order. Not only is the Quant score held in higher regard in admissions to most Finance programs, but the most recent Class Profile for students matriculating into the program at MIT lists a median score of 170/170 on the Quant portion of the GRE® (out of those who submitted scores), with an overall class size of 141. Interestingly, no GMAT™ data are provided. If you need a high Quant score, then you should go out and earn the highest one you can. On the GMAT™, I think anything less than a 50 in the section will do your application no favors; on the GRE® (which many people, myself included, believe is easier), anything less than 169. When the scoring is that competitive, you really should put your best foot forward.

Good luck.

- Andrew

MfinStudent
Hello, I am a senior student in South America, planning to apply for the MIT Mfin for the 2023 intake. I just took the GMAT Exam today and got a 710 (V42/Q45).
I have to say I am not very surprised by the overall score (I had gotten a 700 and 710 in my two free official practice tests) but I am really shocked by the distribution: on the mock tests I was usually scoring around 48 in the Quant. That really worries me, because the MIT Mfin places a lot of emphasis on the Quantative part, so I am not sure whether to retake or not.

I think I have a better-than-average profile, so wanted to know if that would be sufficient to safely say my GMAT score won't be a problem (assuming it is again mandatory, if it's not I won't submit it). My background:
-South American BBA student at a local well respected university - currently top of the class.
-Won the CEO For One Month program at Adecco for my country (against some +4000 other kids) to work with the CEO of the company for one month.
-After the CEO program got into Venture Capital as a part-time intern, for one of the biggest funds in LATAM (top quartile by AUM) where the founder is actually an MBA Sloan graduate. Currently in a 1 year internship, and expecting to receive return offer for full-time at the end of it.
-Several extracurricular activies: Research assistant and member of the business angels club at the Business School of my Uni; joined the biggest student-run finance organization in the world and in two months got to the top of it, running one of the three divisions; created the first finance club of my university and started doing research reports; TA of accounting at my uni; class representative; some other minor stuff like captain of the chess club.
-This year I am planning to create one or two charitable societies
-I am a pretty charismatic person, so I think the interview would be a booster (if invited).

So that's it. The MIT MFin is super important for me, that's why I am working towards it a year in advanced. But I also don't like to study (didn't like to prepare the GMAT at all) and my holidays end next week so if I retake would be alongside school and work.
Have been planning and working entirely on my own so far, but now would really appreciate your thoughts regarding what should I do, and what my odds are.

Thank you! :please:

Hi MfinStudent,

A 710 with a V42 is a fantastic score. Congratulations! However, there is still room for improvement in case of Quant. If you have time on your side, you may consider a retake. However, for a better perspective, it would be better to reach out to some admission consultants for profile evaluation. You may find this link helpful: https://www.gmatwhiz.com/mba-consultation

Feel free to reach out in case of any queries!

If you think you can improve the Quant and money/time is not a factor, the question may be why not. Perhaps reach out to your intended schools to hear their thoughts.
