Hey all, long time reader -- first time poster in this forum.
I've been considering getting an MBA for the past few year or so and applied to many schools for fall 2011 enrollment. My dream is to start my own real estate development company in the future and would like to get into RE -- either by working for a development company, a REIT or even green energy consulting (I'd like to start brownfield redevelopment). I have roughly 5 years of work experience as of this January -- was an officer in the US Air Force and stationed overseas in Europe and deployed to the Middle East and now currently working in construction management. However, my GPA is abysmal (2.7) primarily because when I was in undergrad, 1) I didn't know I wanted to get an MBA. 2) Since I knew I had a job lined up (with the AF) -- I didn't really care that much in getting all A's. 3) I realized my soph yr that I hated engineering but stuck with it anyway to get that technical background.
Basically, I'm asking -- no matter how stellar my work experience is (it's pretty legit -- I've worked with Pres. Bush, Dr. Rice and several 4 star generals in implementing entire AF wide change via Six Sigma) do I even have a shot at the top 10 schools with a GPA that low? Do I need to get an 800 on the GMAT to even remove doubt from the adco's that I can take on the coursework? I took the GMAT's last year before applying and it was pretty subpar (650) so obviously I knew I had no shot to get into the top 3. What if I break the 700 plateau for fall 2012? I've gotten into 2nd tier schools this winter -- but I'm declining because I really don't see a point in going to a 2nd tier school for a Master's degree. I'd rather just work my way up my organization and build my own network.
Extracurricular include -- my own photography business (side gig), volunteering with several organizations to help clean the city I live in (and have been doing that for the past 3 yrs).
Any advice is appreciated. Feeling slightly dejected -- if only I had a time machine to kick my younger self into shape about my grades...
