Typo, my bad. I think my subconscious was imagining my target score
bb
Huh. Super weird. I have Q49, V42 and that’s 750.

Q50 and V 44 should be at 760 or a 770 score. Are you sure these are the sectional scores you received? This is not a typo? It was not V 40?

Sorry for taking the conversation into a different direction but I feel this is kind of important to validate.

I gave my GMAT on 3rd October and got a 740 (Q50, V44, IR 5)

TL, DR:
[list]Will going from 740 to 760 make any difference in my application or scholarships in US?

Bummer. It would’ve been an easy solution 😂

The answer will depend a little bit on your demographic. If you are the famous south east Asian male engineer then improving 20 points is a worthwhile attempt. If you’re anyone else, this is a great score.

At the same time, anyone who walks out of the test center believes that they could do better. I do not have an explanation why but everyone sees areas of improvement and immediately assumes that they can do better. MySelf included by the way. However it doesn’t mean people do better…

I would say if you have a spare $300 and you don’t mind taking the test again, moving into the 99th percentile is award of the investment. It would be worth a try, a gamble since the score would make you more likely eligible for some scholarship money or Allow you to be Cone for a stronger program. It will not get you in but it will not keep you out.

I gave my GMAT on 3rd October and got a 740 (Q50, V40, IR 5)

TL, DR:
Will going from 740 to 760 make any difference in my application or scholarships in US?
Will my low IR be a problem next year, given that DI will gain popularity in focus edition?
I wish to target the top 15s in the US and scholarship will also play a big part in my decisions.
I love you guys and owe my score to you

I haven't been able to decide whether to move on or to retake. I feel that I could have done a little better in the verbal section. I panicked around questions 20-25 and spent too much time in two CR questions re-reading multiple times. As a result, I had to guess the last two questions. I haven't seen the ESR yet, so I am not 100 % sure where I have made mistakes.

Another issue adding to my dilemma is that I am not particularly weak in any one section. I think I make mistakes based on the difficulty level. So, I am not sure how to improve. But a general trend through my prep and mock experience was that I usually made more mistakes in the SC questions, especially in the advanced and subtle ones. They ate up a lot of time and I had to hurry through the CR and RC questions.
On the actual exam though, the SC experience was different (compared with the OG-OG Review materials and the official mocks 1-4). The SC questions felt quite different in the actual GMAT. They were mostly short questions and had no obvious issues like parallelism/modifier placement or S-V error, etc. The issue often came down to meaning. They didn't take as much time but were very puzzling. I am not sure how I can get better and more efficient with my process in handling these questions.

On my official mock tests 1-4, I had scored 740, 750, 760 and 770 (Q50, V40 and V44) and was confident that I could get around V42-V44 in the actual exam with the total score of 750-760 or maybe a 770 if I could execute properly.

After giving the exam, my feelings have changed slightly. I feel I might be able to pull a 760 on best performance but probably not a 770.

So, it doesn't seem worthwhile to spend money and another 20 days trying and get a maximum increase of 10-20 points to get to 750-760. People have said to me that going from 740 to 760 would not make any difference whatsoever and unless I break the 770 it wouldn't be of significance.
Is this notion correct?
(I am from an over-represented pool: Engineer)
Or can this (740 to 750-760) increase benefit me in any way (in my application or in my scholarships)? Could this be worth the extra effort and money? Can I even get a 760? I could panic and end up with a much lower score :|

Another thing that I am worried about is the low IR score (IR 5). I was upset with my Verbal time management and that sort of sabotaged the IR. With GMAT moving to focus edition and DI getting special attention, I am really worried if this low IR becomes a deciding factor next year (I won't be applying this year)

I want to get a better score, but I feel a bit exhausted. So, the motivation level is starting to fluctuate. It moves between 'let's try for 770' and '760 may not be possible, just let it go'.

I wish to target the top 15s in the US and scholarship will also play a big part in my decisions. Please advise.

Lastly, I want to say that in these 4 months of prep, I fell in love with the process and the community. Retake or not, I owe my success to the amazing people. The Mods, The Experts, GMAT Ninja on YouTube, Manhattan SC guide (whoever wrote that), and all the people on this forum, I absolutely love you guys.

First of all, Congratulations and IR 5 is not poor. It's quite acceptable as in it won't raise a red flag. As for your overall score and scholarship relation, I think an admission consultant will be able to help you better but the better your score, the more appealing you become and hence better the chances of a scholarship. 740 is above the average GMAT score of all B schools so you are well placed there but there will be a fair number of people at 740-750. A more stand out score is 780 or above but not even that will ensure an admit, let alone a scholarship. So a lot will depend on your overall application but to make it more enticing, another push at GMAT isn't a bad idea.
Look, 740 is great by all means but if your ambitions are greater, you might want to pick yourself up and give it your all once again. Since you are planning to apply next year, you have the time and that is a plus. Take a month off studies and then re-start. But in this month, ensure that you keep reading etc to keep your skills up to date.

Best Wishes!

Thanks for the advice. I'm planning to give it another shot. Just one more thing, if I end up getting a lower score, will it impact my application (or scholarship eligibility) in any way?

Hi fk611,

740 is a great score! That said, if you think you can bump up your score to 760 without a ton of effort, I think giving the GMAT another shot is a good idea.
