I'm going with A here.

C--->continue to sharply rise is wrong. "continue to rise sharply" is the right form of it.

C looks the best as well as idiomatic .. The idiom is rightly written ... but "sharply rise" still creates a doubt .. what's the OA and OE??

Are these test writes really paranoid about split infinitive ("continue to rise sharply" instead of "continue to sharply rise") ?

I would go with A.

If C had been "If metal prices continue to rise sharply" instead of "sharply rise", then C would have been a better choide.

A doesn't make much of a sense to me ... reason being .. here we are treating metal prices to be the subject of the sentence and saying that they are continuing "their" rise ... "metal prices " is not a tangible object which can continue its rise .... also the inverted order has made the sentence hard to understand ... OA shouldn't be A .. C, although looking awkward, is still gramatically correct .. sharply is an adverb modifying the verb rise ... does anybody have a better explanation?? what's the OA and OE BTW???

Should present metal prices continue their sharp rise, the value of the copper in a penny will soon be greater than the face value of the coin.

a. Should present metal prices continue their sharp rise,
b. If present metal prices are continuing their sharp rise,
c. If present metal prices continue to sharply rise,
d. Continuation of sharply rising metal prices should mean that
e. Metal prices’ sharp rise continuing should mean that

I would like to have the explantion...

C is wrong due to 'split infinitive' (just learned that today ;-) )
B requires 'then' to follow 'if'.
D&E, I can't explain it but it just sounds horribly wrong.

I'll go with A.

Very late, but (A) for the same reasons. To sharply rise should be restated as ---> to rise sharply. ThisSC did violate the split infinitive rule.
