Can I Gain A Top EMBA Admission?... Should I Believe I “Don’t Look Good on Paper”?

Are you underestimating your chances for EMBA admissions success?

I recently worked with an EMBA candidate who had a very, very low GPA in college. Her college record also consisted of a switch in college, and she had stopped and started college multiple times. Academically, her transcripts full of low marks – Ds, withdrawals and probation – certainly weren’t pretty; her GPA barely amounted to a 2.0. But, when she approached me to try to apply to a relatively low-ranked EMBA program, what most drew my attention was her amazing career. She had simply blossomed as a professional after college at a market-leading global computer company. She had multiple promotions, awards, and impressive leadership and technical achievements.

During our strategy session, as I went over the questionnaire I send out to enrolled clients, I asked her, “Why aren’t you aiming higher? You could consider NYU and Cornell.” She never really answered this question; she just stated that she preferred to apply to her much-less-known EMBA program instead. It was a few days later, after she mulled over my assessment of her candidacy and competitiveness, and my recommendations for how she should position herself through the application, that she called me and said, “Let’s go for NYU.”
I was thrilled! I thought she should at least try and I had not understood her prior hesitation.

We at MBA know how to redirect attention away from a low GPA to the other achievements that can potentially result in an admission to a top business program. We worked our magic with this candidate’s essays and recommendation writers, and her application was absolutely stellar. We helped her prepare a knock-out resume and prepared her in multiple sessions for her EMBA interview. With all of the attention to detail and dedication, our hard work resulted in her admission to NYU’s EMBA program!

It was only after all of this, as she was beginning to write a testimonial for us, that this candidate confessed that the reason she had not been willing to entertain NYU at first was because she had spoken to a couple of other consulting companies before us and they had told her that her case was hopeless because, “You don’t look good on paper.” She said one of the companies had her crying. She went on to thank me and MBA for making her believe a top program could be possible, because she otherwise would never have tried. See her direct words below:

I never told you this before, but I went to [MBA admissions consulting firm - name deleted] and [MBA admissions consulting firm - name deleted] to get profile evaluations. The first had me crying after speaking to a lady because she didn't think I had a all. ‘I did not look good on paper.’ The second firm helped me with my resume, but it wasn’t even close to the level of expertise you provided. They all overlooked what you saw in me …

Now, this candidate is studying at NYU!

For those who want to know their odds of admission, feel free to send your resume to us. We can give you an honest assessment. We at MBA put such care into application preparation that our candidates have the great peace of mind that they are presenting truly outstanding applications in an effort to override the weaknesses they have. Because we know how to skillfully present your credentials and direct attention to your winning attributes in order to override weaknesses, we might see great merit in your potential outcomes while others do not.

A take-away: don’t always believe it if someone says you are limited because in some aspects, “You don’t look good on paper”.
