Can I Gain A Top EMBA Admission?... Should I Believe I “Don’t Look Good on Paper”?

I recently worked with an EMBA candidate who had a very, very low GPA in college. Her college record also consisted of a switch in college, and she had stopped and started college multiple times. Academically, her transcripts full of low marks – Ds, withdrawals and probation – certainly weren’t pretty; her GPA barely amounted to a 2.0. But, when she approached me to try to apply to a relatively low-ranked EMBA program, what most drew my attention was her amazing career. She had simply blossomed as a professional after college at a market-leading global computer company. She had multiple promotions, awards, and impressive leadership and technical achievements.

During our strategy session, as I went over the questionnaire I send out to enrolled clients, I asked her, “Why aren’t you aiming higher? You could consider NYU and Cornell.” She never really answered this question; she just stated that she preferred to apply to her much-less-known EMBA program instead. It was a few days later, after she mulled over my assessment of her candidacy and competitiveness, and my recommendations for how she should position herself through the application, that she called me and said, “Let’s go for NYU.”
I was thrilled! I thought she should at least try and I had not understood her prior hesitation.
