Since the deregulation of the air travel industry in the late 1970’s, air fares have been relatively low and the number of passenger miles flown has been increasing. In recent months, however, air fares have risen but the number of passenger miles flown is still going up.
Which of the following can most reasonably be inferred from the statements above?
(A) The cost of air travel does not affect the number of passenger miles flown. (B) People are now flying to destinations that they formerly reached by train or by other modes of transportation. (C) Factors other than low air fares must be contributing to the rise in the number of passenger miles flown. (D) Takeovers in the deregulated air travel industry have been responsible for the rise in air fares. (E) Air fares can climb even higher without causing a drop in the number of passenger miles flown.
Friends...need help to answer above question....could someone please provide explanation to above quest ?.. I think answer is B but as per Answer key it is C ....I am not able to understand how.

The stimulus is stating that in 1970, he air fares have been relatively low and no of passenger miles has been increasing. In the recent months, even though air fares have been rising, the no of passenger miles still are increasing.
We can clearly infer that irrespective of the air fares, the no of passenger miles flown kept on increasing. So something else is contributing to the increase in the no of passenger miles flown. This is clearly restated as answer choice C.
B cannot be the answer choice, because the stimulus does not provide information on how the people traveled during 1970’s. So this cannot be ruled out.
For inference questions, the critical words in the answer choice must be there in the stimulus.
