antiquities is countable noun. Using "amount of" countable nouns is INCORRECT

B. amount of looted antiquities smuggled out of Italy has experienced a 50 percent decline

Same error as option A INCORRECT

C. number of looted antiquities smuggled out of Italy has declined by 50 percent

"number of" correctly refers to countable noun and is singular. Use of present perfect tense "has declined" is CORRECT

D. number of looted antiquities smuggled out of Italy declined by 50 percent

Use of simple past tense is INCORRECT

E. number of looted antiquities smuggled out of Italy has dropped by a 50 percent decline

"dropped" and "decline" are repetitive. INCORRECT

Hence option C

B. amount of looted antiquities smuggled out of Italy has experienced a 50 percent decline --> same as A

C. number of looted antiquities smuggled out of Italy has declined by 50 percent --> correct

D. number of looted antiquities smuggled out of Italy declined by 50 percent --> "since" is present, so present perfect tense is required

E. number of looted antiquities smuggled out of Italy has dropped by a 50 percent decline --> dropped and decline are redundant

Could you help me with this SC question. I was confused between option C and D. I chose D because I thought "Since the Italian government began a crackdown on the black market in the 1970's" doesn't represent present participle. "Since" here is working as "Because" so I thought it is just one past tense dependent clause.

Could you help me with this SC question. I was confused between option C and D. I chose D because I thought "Since the Italian government began a crackdown on the black market in the 1970's" doesn't represent present participle. "Since" here is working as "Because" so I thought it is just one past tense dependent clause.[/quote]

If Since or Within is used in context of time, present perfect tense should be used as the event started in the past but is currently ongoing.
