B is the only options that makes sense to me.. all the other options seem to drift away from the intended meaning... are sprang and evolved redundant??

I believe the correct idiom usage over here would be "not X but Y" and from must be repeated before both not and but in order to maintain parallelism



Sir Arthur Clarke’s imagination and creativity, unlike that of earlier writers on space travel, sprang not in a fit of fantasy but evolved from sharp scientific and technical insight, unfettered by arbitrary limitations of the perceptions of his times.

A. Sprang not on a fit of fantasy but evolved from sharp scientific and technical insight - "not in .... but from..." is unidiomatic the parallelism is not maintained
B. Did not spring from fantasy but evolved in sharp scientific and technical insight - "similar error as Option A
C. Sprang not from fantasizing but from sharp scientific and technical insight - Parallelism is not maintained
D. Did not spring from fantasy but from sharp scientific and technical insight - Correct answer
E. Sprang not from fantasy but out of sharp scientific and technical insight. - Parallelism error

Shouldn't X and Y be parallel when we say "Not X but Y"?

In OA - Did not spring from fantasy but from sharp scientific and technical insight

X = spring from fantasy
Y = from sharp scientific and technical insight

Clearly not parallel!!

It would have been right to say...

Spring not from fantasy but from sharp scientific and technical insight

Please advise...

the only options that obey parallelism are B and D.

but in B it says evolves in, which is wrong

Option B is right away wrong IMO as it changes the meaning of the sentence. The question stem says that something evolved from something but option B says evolved in something.
Hope that makes sense

eveolved in isn't the right usage therefore out

C. Sprang not from fantasizing but from sharp scientific and technical insight
only issue being that the usage of Sprang did not spring is better

D. Did not spring from fantasy but from sharp scientific and technical insight
parallelism perfect meaning is also perfect therefore let us hang on to it

E. Sprang not from fantasy but out of sharp scientific and technical insight.
but out is akward and cinveys distorted meaning

Therefore IMO D

This question can be solved by looking out for parallelism but out of curiosity, when should I use "did not spring from" and when should I use "sprang not from".
Is there any difference between the two?

EDIT
From what I read on the internet, it looks like that they both do mean the same, did + past tense is just used for emphasis. There is no grammatical or meaning difference between the two.
Please correct if I am wrong.
