I have always wondered... They made the decision to interview us based on our application..
Now the interview is just 30 mins.. why does it take more time from the interview stage to the final stage as compared to the submission to interivew?

I am curious about this too. My guess is it depends on the school. I would bet that some schools only want to make sure that the applicant is somewhat put together (not a loon). While other schools probably focus on what the applicant brings to the table and how they interact in a live setting. Anyone have any inside info?

whether you explained enough in you interview to negate certain points they had questions over in your profile?
ie - you had a low GPA. You seemed very unfocussed in your interview, got the school name wrong, talked about different things than in your file.
Makes a bad candidate.
Explains GPA, shows clear focus, all ties back to a good reason to attend, good fit to the school and makes a whole lot of sense.
Makes good candidate.
As it is never the same people who interview who do the overall decision, I guess it is to round off what is purely a pile of stats. The big decision meetings have to take place then, too. Like when you get a bonus at work, a lot of people see it after your appraisal before the number becomes money.
