Hi,
I aim to major in Social entrepreneurship and would like some information about the opportunities at US b-schools specifically about the SEEK program in Kellogg. I am still researching about this option in other bschools and would appreciate any information.

Specifically

1) how many students enroll in the SEEK program at Kellogg?

2)How popular is social entrepreneurship and how many mba applicants wish to enter this field?

3) I wish to take the summer internship in a social entrepreneurship organization. How difficult/easy is it to get the internship and are the companies receptive to taking interns.

4) I will need to work for 2 yrs atleast after mba to pay off my mba loan and possibly get enough capital to start my own venture ( agriculture and infrastructure). Which industry would give me the most relevant experience which will help me setup my organization.

5) Apart from Kellogg, which are the other b-schools I could apply for a social entrepreneurship major.

SEEK is a major and at Kellogg we dont declare a major really. You just have to complete one to graduate and its pretty easy to complete one, many students do multiple majors. Its definitely growing in popularity and the number of courses offered for it are increasing. That said just because you get the major doesnt mean you will end up in the field

I know some but I dont think it is very popular. However, I wouldnt say this is an easy way in because you still have to have a good reason for wanting the field. Schools like to have people find jobs when the graduate so they tend to prefer people with a logical reason for needing an MBA, its a lot better if your reason relates to your background. So the real question is do you have a background in social enterprises?

Depends what you want to do. Lots of non-profits will take internships but the question is will you get paid for the internship? maybe but maybe not. Coporate social responsibility is another area to look at and there are some internships in that but not a lot. However, remember only a small percentage of a class wants these careers so you arent competing like the consulting folks.

Some schools do loan forgiveness. Kellogg has some sort of system. It is possible to get capital to start a venture. The 1 acre fund was started by a Kellogg student when he was still in school which seems like it is sort of what you want to do. https://www.oneacrefund.org/

thanx a ton for your responses. though I don't have any social enterprise experience, i have experience in start-ups and most recently am tryin to turn around a distressed manufacturing unit. i really do want to get into start an enterprise of my own a few years after graduating. I'm not sure whether my NGO volunteer activities is sufficient reason?

I intend on working in a general management role immediately after graduation. Is this a reasonable goal to have?
