Project SC Butler: Day 45: Sentence Correction (SC2)

Some analysts of retirement problems insist that the only way to provide equity and protection for all Americans is to amalgamate all retirement-income systems, including Social Security, into one central system.

(A) insist that the only way to provide equity and protection for all Americans is to amalgamate

(B) have insisted the only way equity and protection can be provided for all Americans is amalgamating

(C) insist the only way to provide equity and protection for all Americans is the amalgamation of

(D) are insistent that the only way equity and protection can be provided for all Americans is the amalgamation of

(E) insist that the only way for the provision of equity and protection for all Americans is to amalgamate

The best/excellent answers get kudos. There can be no best answer, or a few excellent answers!

Since "insist" is used in the sentence, subjunctive mood must be used i.e. "insist" must be followed by "that". Options B and C are eliminated since these options don't have a "that" after insist.
In option D, ".....is the amalgamation of..." is illogical. The correct construction is "...amalgamation through...". Hence eliminated.
In option E, parallelism is violated. The correct construction is "..to provide X is to amalgamate Y...". The original sentence doesn't have any error and uses the correct construction. Hence A should be the answer.

Re: Some analysts of retirement problems insist that the only way [#permalink]
Very easy,

The subject is ''analysts'' and should go with ''insist''.

Answer B uses '' have insisted'', which is incorrect because there is no action happened in the past. B is out

Answer D uses '' are insistent '', which is absolutely wrong. D is out

Only A, C, E left.

Answer C uses ''the amalgamation of'' -> incorrect-> C is out.

Answer E uses ''for the provision '' -> incorrect.

Answer A uses '' to provide'' and '' to amalgamate'' -> correct, clear and concise.

Answer A.

Official Explanation :

In choice B, “that” missing after “insisted” makes the choice unidiomatic. Furthermore, “…for all Americans is amalgamating…” is not idiomatic.

In choice C, “that” is required after “insist” to make the choice idiomatic.

Choice D and E are wordy. Moreover, in choice D, “for all Americans through the amalgamation of” would have been logical instead of “…for all Americans is the amalgamation of...”. In choice E, use of “provision” is incorrect.

In choice A, parallelism is maintained through “…to provide X is to amalgamate Y…”. Furthermore it is concise and idiomatic. Hence, A is the best choice.
