Some individuals have an allergic sensitivity to certain proteins, some of which are found in the rubber most often used to make surgical gloves. However, because Manufacturer X does not use those types of rubber in its gloves, individuals who need to use surgical gloves but are allergic to those proteins can use the gloves made by Manufacturer X without risking an allergic reaction. Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. The non-allergenic gloves have a number of other benefits that make them a better choice for people who need to use surgical gloves.

B. Individuals affected by protein allergies are not equally sensitive to all varieties of protein.

C. Surgical gloves are the only product in which allergy-causing rubbers are used.

D. There are other substances besides proteins present in surgical gloves that are known to cause allergic reactions.

E. Allergy-causing proteins are not present in the rubbers used by Manufacturer X in concentrations high enough to cause an allergic reaction in an individual who uses Manufacturer X's gloves.

Answer D claims that regardless of protein free surgical gloves produced by Manufaturer X, these gloves may still cause allergic reactions per other substances. " There are other substances besides proteins present in surgical gloves that are known to cause allergic reactions." Hence assuming D it demolishes the argument that individuals who use the gloves made by Manufacturer X will not risk an allergic reaction. Any thoughts...

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The passage argues that individuals sensitive to certain proteins common in a common variety of rubber can avoid allergic reactions by using a glove that doesn't use those types of rubber. The argument assumes that the type of rubber in those gloves doesn't contain those proteins, either! Otherwise, how would someone avoid an allergic reaction?
Whether the gloves have "other benefits" is not essential to this argument, so (A) is incorrect.

Choice (B) is also incorrect because we don't really don't know enough to talk about "varieties of protein."
Choice (C) is also irrelevant. Other products aren't relevant here. Neither are other materials that might cause allergic reactions.
Choice (D) is not an assumption of the argument; it goes against what the argument is saying. If there were other potential allergens, the conclusion that people can avoid allergic reactions by using Manufacturer X's gloves wouldn't make sense.

Choice (E) fits with our prediction and is a good answer. If choice (E) were not true, the argument wouldn't work, which makes it an assumption.
