Don't cancel scores. Its a bad idea 99% of the time. Almost every school wants to see your high score and thats it. During the application you enter your high score into the form, not all of them. The real score is just used to verify that is a score you actually got.

So you just spent $500 without even getting an idea of how you performed. You would be better off finding you got a 550 but nailed the quant and need work on your verbal than having no idea what you got.

I am of the opinion you should NEVER cancel a score. If you get two 550s and then a 700 schools wont care what the other two scores were. Besides your official record shows that you canceled the score, it doesn't show a score but it does indicate you took it and canceled.

There is nothing worse than not knowing how well you actually did after months of preparation. You are losing out on chances to identify ur weakness and working hard at it.

OK Guys i'm back to share my experience!

Thanks to ioiio, riverripper & Darden2010 for words of wisdom! Really appreciate it!

This foum is more like a school to me, reminds me of my Undergrad & Graduate Schools. Learn a lot from you guys! On this forum, for me it is more like getting trained befor joining my Degree Program at any of my dream schools! So thanks a lot guys and looking forward to lot of healthy interaction in future!
-----------------------------------------------
Now, What happened on test day?

For my test prep used the very basic materials - OG10, OG11, MGMAT Books & SETs.

More or less, I was satisfied with my prep & confident about my success! On exam day, AWA was smooth but got stuck in quant (somewhere around 15th prob), which was quite a demoralising factor.

Being an engineer (from fairly good school of my country) & have taken mutliple busniess courses, i can say i am little above average in quant. Also, scored quite satisfactorily on simulated CATs, i expected my quant section to be smooth ride but it wasn't, which made me re-think whther i should accept the score?

Verbal was same as it was during prep; since I scored between 35-40 during prep, so wasn't expecting much jump on Verbal!

Apart from quant being a demoralising factor, there are few other reasons why i didnt accept the score:

1. Got very limited choice in terms of B-Schools, where i want to apply....so can't take chances!

2. From this forum i learn that at top B-Schools, recruiters look quite seriously into ur GMAT score for shortlisitng candidates, and i don't wanna miss on tht part

Being through TWO professional courses i understand how it feels to be missed on a short-listed list of candidates of a top recruiter during a campus recruitment round

3. Lastly, I have invested lot of time, energy & money on this test in last 3yrs so don't want to end up half way.......... (b'coz of my work schedule i was always on & off my GMAT prep, lately realized it's high time.....so  )

So, here i am......now my plans are to work on the loop holes and wrap it up by year end as have plans to apply in Cycle-1 next year.

As usual, inputs are invited!

Thanks & Cheers!

I would like to echo the posters here.. I sit for my GMAT last Tuesday, on 30th of October. And, I was on the verge of canceling my score... Actually, and at the end of the test, I had to wait for 4 minutes before deciding that it won't be harmful if I see my score to address my weaknesses. My score was 700, (Q: 85%, V: 84%).. With this score, my application will be competitive at any top 10 school.....

Hmmm I always hear stories about people not having enough time to finish the quant sections.
When I first took the GMAT I had an opposite experience.
I finished the quant section in like 25 min. I felt time preassure and I clicked 'next' without double-checking the answers. I was mad at muself at the end of quant for rushing through, but I also came up with strategy for the verbal. I tried to answer 5 questions every 9 min of the verbal and that is how I kept pace in verbal and I ended up with a really good verbal score and a terrible quant score :) so I am re-taking the test in a couple of weeks and I think my quant score will improve a lot by just taking more time to solve the problems.
I also felt like I had a lot of time for each question of the verbal section :) I don't know what is it with me but I never struggle with time on the GMAT.

Don't cancel your score. Even if you are the best engineer, the quant section will not be a smooth ride. Same in Verbal. I got 5.0/5.0 on my High School AP for both AB and BC calculus and an engineering degree from a top U.S. school and it was not a smooth ride for me to get 50 Q.

GMAT will throw all the tricks at you when you do well and so you should be feeling good when you get stuck. I know this is counter-intuitive.

Dude do NOT cancel your score. I have an engineering background from India too. I have never been able to finish the quant section.

Past two weekends I have been able to finish only 33/37 and 34/37 questions on the GMATPrep quant. I got 13 and 14 wrong respectively. My quant score was 48 on both.

I was feeling like giving up forever on GMAT after I finished on the quant sections. So that dejected feeling does not really tell you what the actual score will be. It just means you did not do as well as you could have done.

I am in agreement with BCC145 and gluon here. Even with the best engineer, getting Q50-51 will not be a smooth ride. Unless you are scoring 51 on every CAT from every vendors, there will be questions that you will have a hard time with. I am fortunate enough to score high in math consistently and I can say that in the real thing, there were some problems that I thought to myself "how in the world I can go about and solve this?" Fortunately, I was able to solve some of them, but given a different moment, I might not be able to.

Good luck next time!

I'm in the same boat. I have literally 10-15 minutes of spare time after each section, and probably should spend more time quadruple-checking my Q answers. :(
