The examples given by the author depends on proper use. It does not refute the generalization that money is the cause of all things evil.
(A) it is.

Hello, HongHu, banerjeea_98 and other guys

I think your explanation is similar to choice D.

Could you help me to refute choice D?

Thanks

it has to be (A)...

even if you acknowledge (D), actual argument "Money is the root of all evil" is still not fulfilled.

The argument is not logically flawed because of D, as food, clothes and shelter could also be received as charity. Money just buys these things at times..and hence is not THE root of evil, even if food, clothes and shelter lead to evil

(D) fails to acknowledge that food, clothes, health care, and shelter can sometimes lead to evil

(D) seems to force us to believe that food, et al, must sometimes lead to evil. While practically, we may figure out instances where this could be true, this is CR and we are not supposed to use prior knowledge. Afterall, what if they do not?

This was my reasoning, though it took me a while before i eliminated this choice. Presumably like you, I was torn b/w A and D and did not find it as easy as the rest of the crew.

Arsene_Wenger, thanks

(D) fails to acknowledge that food, clothes, health care, and shelter can sometimes lead to evil

We don't know whether the author admitted to or not, right?

So, A is the best.

Basically the refuting argument is if it is evil then it must be because of money (Evil->Money, as long as we see evil, we know money is the root). What he needs to prove is that some evil is not because of money (Evil->nonMoney), which is what A suggested. But he didn't do that. What he did is to say money sometimes leads to good things (Money->nonEvil). What D suggest is to acknowlege that money can sometimes leads to bad things (Money->Evil).

I am amazed by the way Ms. Hong aproaches the CR....
if anyone is ever capable of getting into people's minds, I think her mind would be something like a perfect organized into formulas type of mind. And that her thinking process is always regulated by the logic and common sense.

I am really amazed and could even say envy....her mind....

Oh please stop that. Don't spoil me too much or those logical circuits may very well be shortcircuited if they are overheated. ;) (And never mind the other tangled up circuits please. )

one thing that I admire more than a clever mind, is a clever modest mind.....
