What throws me off here (w/ answer choice E) is 'but' between rejecting the expansion + reducing the number of games. There is parallelism here as both clauses indicate a shortening of the NBA season. Why is 'and' not the correct joining of the two clauses?

The first thing that jumps out at me here is the "-ing" modifier at the beginning of the sentence. The underlined portion has to begin with somebody who can actually speak, like Adam Silver...

This looks fine in terms of the "-ing" modifier. "Number of games" is fine, too. Sure, I suppose the two "thats" are sort of parallel structurally, but they also make absolutely no sense as two parts of a list. Eliminate (A).

This one is a pretty easy elimination: "speaking" can't modify "the idea." Also, "amount" can only be used to modify non-countable nouns. Eliminate (B).

"Amount" is the only real problem here. Eliminate (C).

This is a similar error as in (B): "speaking" can't modify "the expansion", because expansions can't speak. Also a little bit weird to say "reduce the games played" -- I think we're trying to reduce the number of games, not the actual games themselves.

I got the answer correct based on Amount&Number difference between option C and E .But I'm not sure when to use there terms ,please explain when/what situation should we use "amount" and when should we use "number"?

Hi buan15,

My reply is not specific to this question, but it's important to recognize that we aren't looking at an absolute rule in such cases. That is, if we start with a that, we never require another that after the and. However, generally speaking, the longer the construction, the more likely the reader is to lose track of what the author is looking to do with the and.

In other words, including an element that helps the reader keep track of the parallel elements in a list is a good (but not necessary) thing.
