For a certain exam, a score of 58 was 2 Standard Deviation below the mean, and a score of 98 was 3 Standard Deviation above the mean. What was the mean score for the exam?

Ans: 74
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can someone please break this down for me, as Im stumped on how to calculate this.

58 = M - 2x
98 = M + 3x

solve for M and x

x = 8
M = 74

This is a simple algebra question disguised as a complex statistics problem....
