hi all,
as the gmat exam starts with average difficulty questions, i was wondering how that level translates in this forum. Is it equivalent to sub-600 questions or 600-700 level questions ? It would be great if someone would post some examples of first question that one might encounter (in every Quantitative and Verbal sections) at the exam.

This is not at all standardized, especially since the first question could even be experimental! I wouldn't believe anyone who claimed to know the difficulty level of the first question, and I wouldn't waste any time worrying about it. The first question might be easy for you, or it might be so difficult that you need to guess and move on. Treat it like any other question!

To the best of my knowledge the difficulty level of the first question can range from the easiest to the most difficult. Here is the evidence that I have:
1) GMATPrep: In one of my GMATPrep Practice Test 2, the first question was on standard deviation and I would rate it at the highest difficulty level. Please see the attached image. Because GMAC does not disclose the difficulty level of individual questions, my guess of whether this is one of the hardest questions can be questionable. However, I would rate it as a difficult question, and certainly not of average difficulty.
2) The second source is from earlier administrations of GRE(written by ETS) which used to be computer adaptive similar to the GMAT. I am talking of circa 2005 when GMAT was also conducted by ETS. I have strong reason to believe that the computer adaptive algorithm that ETS used was the same for both GRE and GMAT. The reason I bring up GRE is because the test writers allowed students to see the difficulty level of all the questions that they faced in the actual exam. In the attached image, I have shown the difficulty level of the first question from seven different actual GRE exams. The difficulty level of the questions in the GRE exam ranges from 1(easiest) to 5(hardest). As you can see the difficulty level of the first question ranged from 2 to 5, indicating that the difficulty level of the first question is not fixed. I believe the same was the case when ETS was conducting GMAT, and I have every reason to believe that the algorithm remained the same with the switch to Pearson Vue writing the GMAT beginning early 2006. Of course, all of this is based on connecting these dots and I could be wrong.
The best strategy is to ignore all of this and do your best in the exam. If your first GMAT question is difficult, be prepared to let it go if you are not making any progress. It is never prudent to spend too much time on any given question, and more so on those that are beyond your ability.
