This is a SC Butler Question

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Starting off in a small studio, the firm Reactive Media formed a contract with a major client early on and, like other small web development firms were not, was not affected by the Internet's economic downfall in the year 2000.

A. the firm Reactive Media formed a contract with a major client early on and, like other small web development firms were not, was not affected by the Internet's economic downfall in the year 2000

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The like section should not include a conjugated verb. In this answer choice, however, the like section includes a conjugated verb (like other small web development firms were not).

What helps us identify this question as a Comparative question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    Like, unlike, than, as

B. the firm Reactive Media formed a contract with a major client early on and, like other small web development firms, was not affected by the Internet's economic downfall in the year 2000

This answer choice correctly removes the conjugated verb (were) from the like section of a comparative.

C. a contract with a major client was formed by the firm Reactive Media early on and, like other small web development firms, was not affected by the Internet's economic downfall in the year 2000

Although this answer choice corrects the original Comparative error by removing the conjugated verb from the like section, it creates a Dangling Modifier error. The original sentence begins with a modifier: Starting off in a small studio. A modifier should be placed right next to the noun it describes. The only noun that this modifier can logically modify is the firm Reactive Media. The noun the firm Reactive Media, however, is quite far from the modifier that describes it.

What helps us identify this question as a Dangling Modifier question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

A modifier, characterized by all of the following:
    1. Verb+ing or Verb in 3rd form
    2. Separated from the rest of the sentence by a comma
    3. Appears at the very beginning of the sentence

Whenever you see this Stop Sign, focus on the modifier: check whether the noun right after the modifier is indeed the noun that the modifier describes. If it isn't - you've found your mistake.

D. the firm Reactive Media formed a contract with a major client early on and was not affected by the Internet's economic downfall in the year 2000, like other small web development firms were not

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect and repeats the original Comparative error. The like section should not include a conjugated verb. In this answer choice, however, the like section includes a conjugated verb (like other small web development firms were not).

What helps us identify this question as a Comparative question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:
