Hello, I will be starting a 3-month self preparation routine soon. Should I start with a practice test just to see where I stand?

Or would this be pointless?

Yes take a practice test before you start your prep . By doing so , you'll know where your weaknesses are and you can devote more time to them . Don't attach too much importance to the overall score though .

Should I take a computer based test or a paper test? And where can I find one? Thanks.

Take a computer based test. If you are looking for a free test, go to mba.com and download their GMAT Prep software. This software offers the 2 best free tests available. Make sure to save one of the tests to take after all your preparation but before your actual test. This will give you an idea of where you start.

But if you'd like, you can purchase study material from one of the companies on GMAT Club, and they will offer practice tests. You can use one of theirs to see where you are starting. Examples would be Kaplan or Manhattan GMAT. Good luck! And stop by often for help with your journey. This is the best spot to be!
