Hello,

How can I create a hook for my statement of purpose? I want to say that although I have switched majors from architecture to finance, I have always had in interest in finance.
I am applying to specialized master's programs and am in the process of filling in my essays.
Also, is it worth mentioning that I actually switched majors twice before settling on finance?
Are there any templates, guides for writing essays?

Thank you

Hello danymasri98,

One of the most challenging, yet crucial parts of the MBA application process is the essay. A way to express your accomplishments and goals, along with personal and professional attributes, the MBA SOP can give you an edge over other candidates with similar scores and work experience.

However, we need to dive deeper into your storyline and understand the logic and reasoning behind your decisions. This will help us articulate your essays better and create a strong storyline for your applications to the school of your choice.

We recommend scheduling a free profile audit call with our MBA experts who will brainstorm further with you on your profile. Alternatively, you can connect with us at +91 9820491179

To find the "hook" for your SOP, it's best to think back to the first times you felt motivated or at least had a tinge of ambition to understand or further study a topic, in your case finance. A specialized degree program, such as a Master's in Finance or similar, looks for people who are truly passionate about the subject from an academic perspective, and the many times you felt motivated to understand various financial concepts you faced in your daily life are one of the many impressive ways to create a hook for the SOP. It's also perfectly fine if you did not find your calling for finance early on and studied something else. There are many people who do not realise their interest in a subject until later and thoroughly consider why they then need to change majors, which you should also address in your SOP.

Here are a few other tips for your applications-

For MFin applications, I advise you to address the following points in your application to demonstrate a strong motivation for the program:

Academic focus: Solid GMAT is good. Highlight any other academic accolades, scholarships, or recognitions you have received.

Proof of enthusiasm and motivation for the subject: Provide context regarding your passion for finance, starting from an early stage, and supplement your interest with examples of relevant courses, internships, or projects you have undertaken.

Understanding, experience, and appreciation of the subject through real-life applications and projects: Utilize insights from your internships, jobs, or other finance and economics related projects. Discuss specific projects or related topics that have been pivotal in motivating you to further explore the subject.

Super curricular activities: Share details about supplementary books, articles, research papers, or newspapers you have read. Highlight any relevant podcasts you listen to and explain how these activities support and complement your interest in the subject.

I strongly advise you to cover these points thoroughly in your SOPs.

Additionally, having a variety of extracurricular activities and language skills is advantageous. Discuss how these experiences and skills can contribute to your future as a business leader.

Here are a few other points to keep in mind:

1.Demonstrate originality and a thoughtful approach in your application.
2.Show active engagement with the target school and potential recruiters to learn about the post-MFin prospects, showcasing your conscientiousness. My applicants who recently successfully converted their offers from LSE had actively reached out to professors and engaged in discussions to gain meaningful insights about the program and courses. Demonstrating enthusiasm to truly understand the academic environment at LSE and other schools can greatly contribute to your success.

Get candid advice tailored to your specific situation. We do not cap discussion hours with our applicants.

Hello danymasri98,

Focus on the "always had an interest" aspect:

Intriguing question: Start with a question that showcases your financial interest despite seemingly unrelated studies. "How does an aspiring architect decipher the complex language of financial markets?"

Unexpected anecdote: Briefly recall a childhood memory revealing your early fascination with finance, e.g., "Building LEGOs wasn't just about towers; it was about budgeting resources and maximizing returns."

Metaphor: Connect architecture and finance through a creative image, e.g., "I traded design blueprints for financial models, both blueprints for crafting something meaningful."

Tailor it to the program: Mention a specific professor or research area: "Professor Smith's work on financial modeling of sustainable buildings ignited my passion to bridge architecture and finance."

Highlight a unique program feature: "Your program's focus on fintech perfectly aligns with my desire to apply architectural thinking to emerging financial technologies."

Focus on finance: Dwelling too much on past switches might draw away from your current passion. Emphasize your financial interest and future goals.

Remember, authenticity is key. Use your unique story and genuine passion for finance to craft a compelling hook and essay. Best of luck with your application!

We offer a limited number of complimentary profile evaluations each week . We match you with the students and alums of top B-Schools according to your background and target schools. In this call, the experts will try to dig out your USP for top B-schools and provide you with honest feedback on your profile and chances to your target schools.

Are there any templates, guides for writing essays that I can Explore to improve my application?

Thank you
I also had a similar experience when I was writing my statement of purpose. I started by explaining why I was originally interested in the new field, instead of just listing the changes in my direction. I wouldn’t focus too much on the fact that I changed my major twice—just logically explain why I’ve now chosen finance. For the structure, I used a simple template: a short introduction, why I chose this field, how my previous experience is relevant, and what I hope to gain from the program.

You do NOT need a hook in your MBA essays.

The MBA Admissions consultant who invented this idea and peddled it to unsuspecting MBA candidates truly committed a crime. Every year, I do too many ding analyses where someone started their MBA essays with some unnecessary hook that did more harm than good.

I have worked in MBA admissions for 16 years. I have personally been in charge of an admissions committee. As Managing Director of GMAC Tours, I partnered with every top MBA program in the US and Europe.

And here’s a scene that never happens: An MBA admissions reader starts reading your application and then they toss it aside because you failed to provide them with a hook in the essay’s first paragraph. Or they move you to the "invite for interview" pile because your hook was so awesome.

The MBA AdComs don't fall for silly gimmicks. That's not how MBA admissions works. It never has been and it never will be.

Your essay will be read and evaluated on the merit of its substance, not some silly little gimmick. For the admissions readers, MBA application review is their job. They don't surf capriciously in the sea of application files looking for hooks and casting aside the ones that don't have them.

If you are applying to selective MBA programs, choose substance over questionable tricks. Seek clarity and show relevance. Find out what's your true story and show the AdCom how it’s relevant to why they should select you for admission.

Oh, and BTW, many MBA programs don't even have a classic "statement of purpose".
