Hi all,
I just got accepted from Stern yesterday and wondering if I need to go to Stern. I am also waiting for CBS J-Term, but was told that J-term students cannot do an internship during the summer. Will that be a huge dis-advantage for international students if my career goal is IB or PE?
PS: Anyone knows the current job market in US? Was told that IB are laying off persons. So I am wondering if it is a good timing to quit the current job and go for an MBA.
Background:
Female
Age-30
5 year M&A experiences in Asia market
Starting from the first question- I am assuming you got into Stern FT MBA program and Columbia J-term.
Knowing the market, I would suggest understanding which companies provide a post-internship full time offers to students from same background (demographics, international students etc) Knowing some of the people I have known, it is tough.
From my experience, the number of firms have limited themselves from providing a full time position to a great number of international students. However, it is not to say that it is true for all (but true for most). Columbia and Stern are both near equals with New York market, so you can place bets understanding your personal situation by reaching out to the current students, and getting the numbers.
My personal inclination will be towards Columbia J-term because of the continuous study program. But Stern definitely has a lot to offer, but the pressure to get an internship will be really intense with all the preparations from the timeline standpoint. IB has a very structured recruitment- completely process driven. J-term buys you this fall to start preparing in advance. Still, I wouldn't dismiss NYU FT MBA, nearly similar. (This is a career perspective- from an admissions perspective, the quality of class will be slightly more competitive in NYU FT 2-year MBA program)
PE is tough (definitely possible) but IB is certainly possible, there are multiple diversity events and early access opportunities that you can leverage in this time.
I'm no expert but some of those could actually be going on this July
