Hi All,

I'm hoping that someone can help me with this decision - I've been fortunate enough to have been accepted to both Stern and Fuqua (with a small scholarship). Short term I'd like to get into management consulting, and I know that people in these forums generally view Fuqua as the better choice for consulting, but I'm from NY and would prefer to build a career in NYC or at the very least, the Northeast (plus the idea of being close to family/friends for my MBA is nice). That being said, I wouldn't want to hurt my career opportunities just for geographic preference.

Is there really such a difference in consulting placement between the 2 schools? Not just for MBB, but for all major firms. If there really is a difference, how well does Fuqua place in NY/the Northeast? I'd be less concerned with leaving NY for 2 years if I knew that I could easily come back.

I know that they're both considered good schools, but in the back of my mind Duke will always be more prestigious than NYU. That being said, I feel that NYU would provide a great opportunity for me to network in NYC - anyone have any input on this?

As for fit, I've visited both schools and can see myself enjoying either, which is why I'm trying to get a better sense of career placement.

Thanks for your help!

I think Stern would be stronger if you know you want to do MC in NYC/NJ. Having said that, Fuqua has a better reputation overall, but is it good enough to topple the local advantage you'll have with Stern? hard to say. Talk to Stern alumni who are working in MC. No one else can guide better.

Fuqua has a very strong presence in the NY and east coast in general. I don't know how that compares with NYU. When it comes to consulting recruiting, you typically work with the recruiter/alumni to get connected with staff at the preferred office. That, along with other aspects about you, will help get you in the door for the 1st round interview. After that, you are competing against every other school/2nd rounder at the preferred office, and whatever connection you built will have minimal impact on getting an offer.

Thanks both of you, as well as everyone that voted. In terms of breaking into consulting, is there really a functional difference between the 2 schools then?

Also, does anyone have any input regarding potential opportunities being more available by being in NYC? If consulting doesn't work out, I can't help but feel that smaller/specialized organizations recruit locally based on need (as opposed to OCR).
