Still Time to Apply to Kellogg EMBA (June 22 deadline)?Around this time of the year, with Kellogg’s EMBA deadline looming in mid-June, professionals reach out to us and ask the question, “Is it still possible to prepare a successful application to Kellogg?” Yes! There is still time!
When should you submit the application? As soon as possible. Like many other top EMBA programs, the admissions process at Kellogg is rolling, therefore the admissions committee reviews applications as they are received and offers admissions to candidates each week between now and the final mid-June deadline. If you apply sooner rather than later, there will be more program seats still available and thus your odds are better in securing a seat because there are more seats available.
What to Do to PrepareIf you are just beginning to get your application together, you are not alone. The typical EMBA applicant faces a tough career and family schedule. Finding the time to work on an application can be challenging. Here are some steps you should take.
No GMAT RequirementFirst of all, take a moment to relish the fact that Kellogg’s EMBA program does not require a GMAT or GRE score! You are able therefore to put your attention on the main application components that will determine your admissions success or failure: namely, the EMBA application essays, recommendations, resume and application form.
Get your recommendations With the final Kellogg EMBA deadline nearing, you should make solid efforts to secure two recommendations. The good news about Kellogg’s recommendations is that they are very concise. Not much text is requested. But this means that the allotted space for comment is “prized real estate”. Make sure your recommendations use the space well to highlight your strengths, achievements and ability to serve as a valuable student in the Kellogg classroom. You want sterling recommendations, because they can help you stand out in the applicant pool and also help to address any weaknesses in your profile.
Discuss your application with your recommendation writers as soon as you can in order to get them “on board” for writing for you. Walk them through the great benefits the program will allow you to bring to your company. If necessary, supply the recommendation writer with a list of your achievements and credentials that they can draw on as they compose their recommendation letter for you.
Create a timeline Even if you will only be applying to Kellogg’s EMBA program and not additional programs, you will want to set out a plan for when you will complete your essays, resume revision and application form. Each of these plays an important role in shaping the admissions committee’s perceptions of whether you are an excellent EMBA candidate nor not. You should set firm target dates for when you will complete initial drafts, revise the drafts, finalize the drafts and submit. Manage your time accordingly!
Write and revise! Start writing your EMBA essays and write with care! Kellogg’s EMBA questions are broad and have no word limits! Definitely don’t present “stream-of-consciousness” essays where you write extensively, edit little, and wander in your discussion in a nonsensical sort of way. The essays should convey that you have put great effort into the application and are very serious about your interest in the school. They should be highly directed and each sentence should be value-added. You should, through the text, successfully persuade the admissions committee you have wonderful experience and skills to draw on in order to enrich their learning environment. In doing so, you should highlight skillfully some of your most compelling achievements, credentials and strengths. Also provide the admissions committee with a clear view of your long-term and short-term career goals, which should serve as great assets for you in the admissions process.
What is an ideal length for each Kellogg essay? The ideal length can vary from candidate to candidate, but somewhere between 500-1100 words each can be a comfortable target.
Don’t neglect your resume and application formAs you prepare your application, also make sure to present an outstanding resume and application form. Especially if you are a candidate who has some weaknesses in your profile – such as a lackluster undergraduate performance, frequent changes in jobs or a gap in employment – you should take efforts to ensure your resume and application redirect attention to the many other credentials you have that indicate you have been successful and have strong skills.
