Struggling to choose 2nd recommender, please help! 21 Feb 2021, 09:51

Hi GMATClub,

I am nearing the end of my application and am really struggling with finalizing my second recommender. I keep hearing different things from everyone. Please weigh in!

Option 1- Founder at a nonprofit I had a leadership role in where I recruited, trained and mobilized volunteers to translate a large amount of academic docs from English to Pashto to make open source education accessible to rural kids in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Pros: great leadership story and impact made
Cons: we have zero personal relationship, he is very kind and has already agreed to write one but I never worked with him (I was mainly autonomous - no supervisor) and he has no personal stories or anecdotes to share about me.

Option 2 - Mentor turned Cofounder, he is the executive director of our nonprofit so I do technically report to him. I have a very long and personal as well as professional relationship to him. He knows a lot about me and would write an amazing recommendation BUT I am afraid his being my cofounder renders the letter useless to Adcom.

Who would you choose?
