We need to compare insects 'in' coffee plantations with insects/those 'in' tropical forests. C is the only option that uses this 'in' and should be the correct answer.

Compare with - Similar categories
Compare to - Different categories

Here its compare with

We need those to refer back to insects

We need to maintain parallelism

Hence correct answer choice is C

The main error (well, at least an important error) in the incorrect answer options is the faulty parallelism in the "either-or" construction.

In A and E, you need "or finding". In B and D, you need "or reported finding".

Studies that have compared the different types of insects in coffee plantations with those in tropical forests have reported finding either a similar or a greater variety in plantations.

Compared with is used to state the differences between the two objects of comparison, hence answer will be (C)

The only answer that maintains proper ‘either X … or Y’ X || Y parallelism is C - ‘either a similar or a greater’. All the other options are clearly not parallel.

C: Correct

The answer is C

Split Correct idiom is compared with to compare two similar entities .
Split 2 Use and in original sentence is wrong
