Hi,
I took the GMAT for the first time in April and scored a 550. I know that I didn't prep enough and I just took one full practice test. I had a lot of stress at work the two months leading up to the test, and I didn't study very regular. I could study for 6 hours on Monday, 4 on Saturday and then don't study at all for one week. I really think I jumped around a lot between sections and really didn't master any topics before I moved on.
I will give the GMAT another go in approximately three months. Would it be bad to first study quant exclusively for a month, and then study verbal exclusively for a month? I think this might help me actually master individual topics. I plan to use TTP for quant and the Manhattan guides for verbal.

You got a decent score of 550 to start with, without having significant level of preparation.
To start with, first you need to have a basic idea about the present level of knowledge to map it to your target score. You can give the diagnostic test a try to assess the present level and then use the GMAT Planner Tool to set up your target test score.
Now, with a 3-months preparation time, it is definitely possible to get a score of 700+. GMAT comes with a structured well-defined curriculum for the testing purpose, hence one can prepare for GMAT with a 120 to 200 hours of time investment. As a thumb rule, one needs to allocate 10 hours for every 10 points’ improvement.
If you are looking for an 85+ percentile in both quant and verbal, you can follow a module-wise learn and refine strategy.
If you stick to the above plan, with proper execution, you can definitely achieve and surpass your target score in the GMAT. Also, you can now choose the order at which you will take the section, so in the preparation also take the sections as per your convenience. However, it is a good idea not to stop any of sections totally while preparing for the other section.
As I said earlier, there are many other students who successfully achieved their target score and surpassed that. Read some of those stories:
• Rhea - journey from 620 (Q45, V31) to 760 (Q50, V41)
• Ishan scored a Q50. Learn how he leveraged the step by step approach taught in the Quant live sessions to achieve this
• Abhijeet scored a 740 in his first attempt and secured an admit in MIT Sloan. Focus and consistent study are key to his success.

- o You can try different platforms like Scholaranium and different Ability Quizzes to test your learning.

From what you describe, it sounds like you understand that a more consistent study routine will be required going forward. While you don't have to study every day, you cannot afford to stop studying for significant stretches of time (GMAT skills do 'fade' if you don't practice them). You could potentially improve a great deal over 3 months if you're focused on learning and practicing the proper Tactics.
I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What were the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores on your Official GMAT (the 550)?
2) What is your goal score?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
4) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
