Submitting to CBS in Feb-March: How to Maximize Success Odds
If submitting to CBS in February or March, your application will be received after the large influx of applications that Columbia receives in early January as candidates try to meet the deadline for merit scholarship consideration. In February-March, you are also beyond the midpoint in the CBS admissions season. Because the Admissions Committee will have already offered many seats to candidates, it is very important that you distinguish yourself. We recommend these as some best practices you should follow:
• Showcase your strengths. You need to make sure you have a strong understanding of your strengths as a candidate so that you can highlight those strategically and optimally in your MBA application. The essays, resume and recommendations should all focus excellently on those strengths to demonstrate how you can be valued-added to the class, how you can impact Columbia and why you should be granted admission.
• Mitigate any weaknesses. You also need to have a strong understanding of your weaknesses and do what you can to mitigate those. If you have a weak GMAT score in quant, take steps to show strength in analytics and quant through other means and metrics. If you are lacking in impressive extracurricular activities, add activities that are high-impact on your profile. Your “weak spots” can be many different things, so be sure to gain a solid understanding of any weak spots and work to minimize their impact on your application.
• Reach out to recommendation writers as soon as possible. In Round 3, recommendations can make or break an application. You are seeking to distinguish yourself as a candidate who will add great value to the class and is heading to a great future. Your recommendations can go far in advancing these ideas. Reach out to your writers as early as you can and guide them to focus on the topics that will greatly strengthen your application.
• Write winning essays. Your essays are your marketing package, and in Round 3, it is all the more important that you use them excellently. They are among the key tools that allow you to sell your candidacy and edge out competition to earn a coveted seat. At MBA Admit.com, we know it is imperative that your content is well-honed and strategic – focusing on your strengths and conveying the great goals you intend to achieve both at Columbia and in your post-MBA career.
• Make your resume shine. Admissions Committee members typically read your resume before they read your essays, so make sure your resume shines. The resume is your 1-page or 2-page tool to illustrate you have strengths in all the key areas the Admissions Committee most cares about. At MBA Admit.com, we strive to sell our candidates fully with the resume. It is a powerful tool that can have an Admission Committee reader already leaning toward granting an admissions interview, even before they move more deeply into the application to read the essays or recommendations. This makes it a potent tool, so use it well!
