Someone recently asked what people who score 730+ on the GMAT typically do that leads to their achieving such high scores. So, I put together this list of success factors.
1. High quality preparation resources - The resources we use when preparing for the GMAT can significantly affect the effectiveness and results of our preparation. So, a key ingredient in achieving a high GMAT score is high quality preparation resources.
2. Learning concepts thoroughly - High scorers learn topics from the ground up and make sure that they fully understand concepts, even if doing so takes going over them multiple times, so that they are fully prepared to apply those concepts in a variety of situations.
3.
Untimed practice - 90 percent of the time, when someone calls me to figure out why he or she is struggling to get results, the person has been doing all practice questions with a timer going. Two minutes per question is just not enough time to learn, especially for someone who is just beginning to prepare. So, do your practice untimed, at least initially. You have to develop understanding and skills. Speed will follow.
4. Using logic along with rules - To score high, go beyond memorizing rules, and train to apply logic and reason things out. I personally recall spending around two hours on one quant question the answer to which I already knew. Why? Because I realized that I didn't fully understand the logic that led to the correct answer. Of course, I wasn't likely to see that exact question when I took the test, but the skills I developed in sorting out that question served me well from then on.
5. Using sophisticated approaches - The GMAT is not that complex, but at the same time, its questions are fairly sophisticated. So, attempting to answer questions by using simplistic gimmicks is not the path to a high score. To score high, fully analyze questions and use sophisticated, solid approaches to arrive at correct answers.
6. Shooting for high accuracy and
streaks of correct answers - People who score high tend to focus on accuracy when training. They understand that the GMAT rewards arriving at correct answers, i.e., getting things done.
7. Understanding what the GMAT tests - People who score high understand that the GMAT tests not only math and verbal skills but also skills such as noticing details, coming up with a plan, using resources effectively, and executing flawlessly.
8. Treating the GMAT as a game - People who score high tend to see the test as a game to enjoy and train for. They enjoy working on their skills and taking practice tests and the actual GMAT to see the results of their preparation.
9. Addressing weaker areas one by one - To score high, it's necessary to track errors and find weaker areas and then strengthen those weaker areas one at a time. You can't afford to avoid your areas of discomfort. You have to dive into them and make them areas of comfort.
10. Growth mindset - People who score high on the GMAT understand that they can develop themselves and hit their score goals no matter what their starting points are.
11. Emotional skills - To score high, have a Zen way of going about things. Remaining calm in the face of discomfort and focusing on success without getting angered or "frustrated" by lack of progress or setbacks leads to success.
12. Sheer determination - In both answering individual questions and preparing overall, people who score high succeed because they are determined to do so and keep going hard until they have achieved their goals.
