Hi, i am an indain IT female 23 years old. I have done my btech at vignan's engineering college affiliated to JNTU kakinada, Andhra pradesh. My B.tech aggregate is 78%.Intermediate 95% and 10th 89.5%. I got placed with tcs in my 4th year btech . Before joining TCS i have worked as assistant professor in an engineering college for 8 months. I joine TCS on 30th jan 2012.I have participated in college level sports events and helped organize many college level fests.

I have taken GMAT in june 2013 . Score(AWA :5, Math :51,verba;:24 Total:640).I am planning to retake the GMAT by 223rd september 2013. I am confused on whether to take tofel or ielts.Tofel dates available only after 0ct 19 2013.Is it ok to take ielts ? I dont want to get into a so so b-school just for the name sake. Please suggest some good b-schools i can aim at.I am interested to apply within first deadline.Awaiting u r reply. :)

Hi there,

Thanks for posting. It sounds like you have decent academics/grades, however I assume you are looking to apply without any work experience?? To get into better ranked schools and also have more chances for better post-MBA jobs, I do recommend considering working for several years first to be honest! That gives you great experience you can bring to the b-school class, and also a better feel for your preferred career path. The average MBA applicant in the US and Europe has 5 years of work experience for example.

Other than that, with a 640 you would look outside the top 20 or more b-schools, looking ideally for schools with an average GMAT 630-680 or thereabouts. You could also consider re-taking if you'd like to aim higher in the future/when you are ready. Schools take the highest score. In terms of what schools, it depends on what you are looking for. I have retaken GMAT today sore is 680 (Math:49, verbal :34). Now can i apply to NYU stren, darden, kellog, tuck

Hi Maggi10,

Congrats on improving your score! That is important in b-school admissions and does increase the ranking of schools you might be able to consider. BUT... you should also understand, as I was just saying to someone else on this board, that b-schools (like it or not) do not make admissions decisions solely based on the GMAT. They aim to make a holistic assessment of your past, present and future.... they want to know what past experiences you have that you'll bring to the table (in particular, examples of leadership, teamwork, making an impact, going above and beyond); they want to know WHY you want an MBA and why their school, and they want to know about your future goals. It should all make sense and flow.... your Past + your MBA = your Future goals.

To get into top 10 programs in particular, you really need to stand out from the crowd and show what you can contribute, and what makes you unique. Solid work experience is an important factor too, I wasn't clear on your experience based on your post? If you can put together a strong package in terms of GMAT, resume & work experience, recommendations, essays, interview etc and make the case for the points I mentioned above, then you could have a shot at some reputable programs.
