Hi,

I posted this in the GMAT general discussion forum and was pointed to post this here as well in order to get some thoughts from an admissions expert:

I applied R2 to HBS and was rejected with no interview. I am going to reapply R1 next year, but I was wondering if anyone thinks it is necessary to retake the GMAT. I will be working over the summer, but I do not mind carving out some study time to boost my score if it is necessary. I am currently a 1L at HLS, so I'm really only willing to apply to the JD/MBA at Harvard for this reason. My GMAT score is a 720 *41V/47Q; 8IR, 5AW). Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi there,

Thanks for posting, and I'm glad you're giving HBS another shot. Your score is strong and in range for HBS. But GMAT is tricky with HBS...a high score is never a guarantee of admission, and a low score might not keep you out either. I've seen applicants with 750s get rejected yet applicants with 690s get in. I think the thing to do is to think carefully about the strengths/weaknesses in your full application -- there may be other areas that are better to invest in to improve. And then decide if you think GMAT is one of those things. It also depends on how easy you think it will be to raise your score -- like if you were practicing above a 720 before you took the exam, then I would definitely retake. Or if you only took it once, then I think it would be good to try again to show you're willing to put in the extra effort. Also, retaking never hurts, as you can cancel a lower score and only report the highest one.

Hope that helps!
Kate
