Sorry about the markers, that is not the approved model and you should’ve had a non-permanent marker which is wet erase.

Keep in mind that you usually get used markers so it’s a good idea to test them out during the instructions and raise your hand to get replacements so you don’t waste time.

About drying, yes they dry out fast and you have to constantly put the cap back on which is annoying and takes time 😢

If the center pens are all like that, I have no idea how my score will turn out even if I made improvements.

For your next attempt, one thing you could try is asking the test center to let you test out a few pens they have beforehand (you could potentially tell them which suit you). You could also try calling the center a few days before and the day of to express your concerns.

Hi NooNYuki,

I'm sorry to hear how everything went. I do agree with bb that you are allowed to test your markers, so if you have any sense that a marker will dry out, ask for a new one before beginning your test. Also, let us know how GMAC ends up responding to you.

Yes, I did visit the test center before the test date to inquire about the pens. The staff told me they can’t tell me anything about the pen until the actual test. How ridiculous is that?
Yesterday when I first received those fat markers I was too shocked. And I did try and selected the better ones out of all available. I only tested whether the ink was ok. Until I did the calculation I found out how the thickness of tip and ink saturation messed up my handwriting. I have never used those big tip markers during my practice. I felt like I was drawing instead of writing.

Hi NooNYuki.

How have you been scoring on practice tests? Are you ready to score 685 if you have markers that work?

Also, in most test centers, the markers are not like the ones you used for that test. So, is there another test center reasonably close to you? Perhaps a different test center would have better markers.

Also, if necessary, maybe you can work out a deal with a test center to purchase markers for them and use new markers for your test.

Maybe after you complained, the test center you used this time will provide better markers. If you ask for a full refund of your testing fee and strongly highlight this issue, they may change what they are doing because those markers sound ridiculous.

Thanks Marty for your reply. My last 4 mock tests were around 605-615 so I definitely needed to work on. But the thing is I think I had quite a few experimental questions on quant n DI yesterday that’s why my score came out that ‚high‘. My verbal didn’t suffer much.

I’ll inquire about the other test center (we only have two.) if they also use fat markers I ll have no choice but to practice with them:( but it is so unfair. Those little things can make a huge difference.

Practicing with them could help a lot in any case, though it's a drag that you don't have something better to use.

Hi NooNYuki,

This is terrible. Can you tell us which centre you went to? Also, you should write an email to Pearson letting them know about this.

Dear GMAT experts and fellow GMAT-takers,
Today, I had my first GMAT attempt and got 595. My target score is 685. So I plan to take it again. Today, I had a very bad experience with the pen I received at the test center. I got refilled big-tip whiteboard markers as pens. You know how difficult it is to write with them especially used ones. The ink is runny and I can barely make out my own handwriting. I asked for replacements but they are all the same. As a result, my quant and DI suffered. (I got Q:80 and DI: 74 only). Of course, I filed a complaint.
Now I'm in a tight spot. Because of my country's situation (electricity cuts and internet interruptions), it is almost impossible for me to take it at home. If the center pens are all like that, I have no idea how my score will turn out even if I made improvements. So I'd like to seek suggestions, especially from bb MartyMurray GMATNinja on how to proceed.
Thanking in advance,

Till the time the situation is not sorted, practice using same thick markers, write big letters and get a sense of how often you will need to get your writing pad changed. Plan accordingly. And yes, testing at home is not a good idea even if there are no infra interruptions.

Hi AjiteshArun
It's called 'Institute of Management Consultants Myanmar' in Yangon, Myanmar. I filed a report to both GMAC and Pearson right after my test. GMAC escalated my case to Pearson too. Two days ago, I got a case number from Pearson and they requested me to give them 3-4 business days to review the case. I will update here when they send me a proper explanation.

Thanks KarishmaB & MartyMurray. I recently inquired another test center and they sent me the photo of pen and scratch book I'll be receiving for GMAT test which looks exactly like the one in Pearson video. So, I'll book my next appointment there. Hopefully they won't have any other problems. Meanwhile, I'm waiting for proper justification from Pearson about my complaint.

Seems to be sorted then! Good. Hopefully your complaint with improve the conditions for other test takers too.

I hope they offer you a refund if you don't get a free retake before booking your next appointment. Hopefully there won't be any issues at the other centre.

All the best!

Again, i’m sorry about your experience. It really sucks when the quality control is not maintained. 😢

PS. I wonder if we should start the whole of shame of test centers or something like that to keep a list to shame them into improving their conditions.

Sorry to hear about the negative impact of pens. I can very much relate to it.

I recently gave my GMAT in a test center in Bangalore. While everything else was good about the experience, I was not happy about the pens. They seemed to work inconsistently with the laminated sheets (which I also felt weren't close to good). Fortunately, I raised my hand and tested out a few pens before I was reasonably satisifed. They were patient enough to let me try out a few and practice writing with it before the test started. I did not let this affect me, but can empathize with others about this situation. At the end of the test I was asked to drop the markers into a container that had other used pens. Felt bad doing so thinking about the subsequent test takers.

From a test that charges as much, I was expecting better quality pens and laminated sheets.

I have provided the same feedback to GMAC.

Update from GMAC
Finally I got an update on my complaint after almost 1 month long.
Quote:

Thank you for your time and patience.

We have confirmed with the GMAC and providing you with a new exam at no cost as a one-time customer service gesture. You will receive a voucher to book a new exam via email in the next 24-48 business hours.

Please be aware that the video link shared by you is very old and has been removed from mba.com. We thank you for bringing this to our attention. You will get an erasable notebook at the test center not a paper notebook. Also, the marker type will be the same as you received on 10 Jan 2025.

Greetings!

Yes, we confirm that you will get a free exam attempt and the marker/erasable notepad will be the same one you used on 10 Jan 2025. Those are the standard items currently used at the Pearson VUE test centers. The video link you reported was too old and GMAC will remove the old link to avoid any misguidance.

They are saying I'll get a free re-test but gonna receive the same pen type? They are saying the marker I received is standard GMAT writing tool?? I'm not sure if they don't want to admit the test center fault or something. They even removed the video link that I provided.. It was the same one here. Can any recent gmat taker confirm the marker type?
Thanking in advance
