I'm sort of thinking like terp here. I know I'm competitive at my top 4 schools and then cornell is "safer". I will admit that I realized I was taking a risk by adding Chicago rather than a Duke/Ross type of school. I do get a bit nervous when I look at my list and cornell is the only "safer" school. But, at the end of the day I would be ecstatic to get into any school on my list, including cornell (had a great time on my visit), and that's what I'm looking for. There were no other schools in the 10-15 range that I wouldn't be a little dissapointed to end up at. I've seen too many BW posts of guys that got into their safety and are considering reapplying next year. If I would not be excited to go to a school, I wouldn't apply. As my list stands right now, I would love to go to anyone of the 5 schools.

This is exactly how I am treating the process. I refuse to apply to any schools that I am not genuinely excited about. If we were expected to graduate into a bull market, I could see myself perhaps going to a safety - but as we both know, that likely won't be the case.

I highly recommend you find the time to visit Chicago. Visiting there is very worthwhile - they have amazing faculty which must be experienced first hand to be truly understood. Also, the school is not for everyone, so make sure the "fit" is there when you visit.

My last piece of advice to you would be to seriously consider UCLA Anderson as that 6th school if you do decide to have one. You're an LA local (like myself) and I have truly been blown away by their program. They are a very well rounded school that is strong in finance, general management/strategy, and entrepeneurship. And although this should be a lower priority item, you'd get in-state tuition there and you would also save on moving/travel expenses which can add up to a decent chunk of change.

Thanks. I just went and checked out the schools you're applying to, it looks like we might be on some similar threads this year. Good luck.

IHateTheGMAT, good choices, and very tough choices at that. I would also suggest you check out (and truly learn about) UCLA as a "safer" school, pretty much for the same reasons terp mentioned. It is a great program and I think you'll enjoy your time there if that ends up being the only school you get into (I'm praying for you that you'll get into all 6 though!).
