Hi everyone,
This is my first ever post in GMAT club. I am an mechanical engineering student with 5 years of experience in an OEM-Two wheeler manufacturing company based in India, and currently I am pursuing Bachelors in Engineering as a full time student (Mechanical). I will have to work for three more years in the same company after graduation. So in total I will have 8 years of experience before applying to Business schools.

The diploma degree is from an Polytechnic college affiliated to AICTE,India and Bachelors is with an major university in Tamilnadu, India. I have 86% percentage in Diploma and in BE 8.96/10CGPA as aggregate. As I am willing to do MBA after three years of working, in countries preferably like US, UK, Singapore, & also considering European countries as various options. I am yet to start GMAT preparations and I will likely to take it up after an year from now(Had an mock test and scored 650. I am the first person to have an engineering degree and also first in attending an university from my family side. My age now is 27 and I will be able to apply for MBA only when I am 30 due to some unavoidable circumstances.

I have various volunteering experiences in community causes as well as helping in crisis to various people. I also worked as an SME in training the trainees in my organisation, part of the team which planted close to 400+ trees, have leadership and volunteering experience in academic levels in various fronts, have been promoted three times in 5 years in my first job.

So my query is, will I be able to enter into business schools with this background at the age of 30 years ? Is it really possible to get an admission at that age with my mixed experience in some good universities say INSEAD, Booth, IE, HBS, Wharton ?

I am looking forward for suggestions, that is it okay to go forward in the direction of Preparing myself for the MBA degree ? I know that the decision is mine, but still I wanted to gather some information before plunging deep. Thank you all in advance for your ideas and information.

Well good sir,
Since you have a full two years before you apply and don't yet have your final GMAT score, I would hold off thinking about school selection. It's too early for that. Instead I would suggest really focusing on thinking about how you can improve your profile. Obviously acing the GMAT is the foundation stone of any strong application, and that is where I would suggest starting, not being satisfied with any score but the best one you can get.

Other than that, what can you do to improve your profile over the next years???

I would like to present you with a list of ideas, which should help you:

- Definitely do at least one if not real real volunteer works while you are working. The BEST possible volunteer work is anything that has to do with leadership or fundraising, so if you see those opportunities, jump on them!

- Make sure you do the best possible at work, taking any opportunities to lead, to get involved in social events, to advance at work, and remain at the top.

- Likewise try and keep up your life! What I mean is that schools LOVE candidates who have a broad range of activities and interests. So sports, culture, whatever. As always, if it is leadership roles you are taking on they are better than non-leadership roles.

- If you have any interest in entrepreneurship as a side project, it can be good to have that in your profile.

- If you have any interest in politics as a side project, it can be good to have that in your profile.

There are probably more things that I am not yet thinking about, but this is a very good place to start!

Overall things look promising. Right now we are too early to start getting into actual school evaluation, but this is a good start.

While you are at it, I would also suggest trying to visit the target schools, to attend events, and to learn about them as much as possible. This long-term work will pay off greatly when it comes time for you to apply.

Hi,

Thank you very much the detailed suggestion. Yes, GMAT is the foundation and I am onto it for the best score of mine. I am writing it in another two months.

Regarding the volunteering experience, I did lead and organised two fundraiser’s, and will definitely look for opportunities to do so again.

Thank you again.

Great!

Keep i t up. and with volunteer experience, keep in mind that if you can get a leadership role its far more beneficial than a participant role.

Best of luck with your test!
And let us know how you do,
Best,
