Question 2.

2. Which of the following statements can be inferred from the information provided in the three passage tabs?

A dirty face is the root cause for acne.

No. This is what we know:

During her adolescence, Pam began developing chronic acne. At first, she would wash her face everyday - some of her classmates suggested she had acne because her face was not clean. She did notice her face got very oily once adolescence began. So she started washing her face 3 times a day with a cleanser. Yet, her acne persisted...
also
Acne-creams: daily use, the most common creams include 2-5% benzoyl peroxide that attack facial bacteria

So cleaning her skin did not improve her case. So we cannot infer that dirty face is the root cause of acne from the passage. Also acne creams do kill facial bacteria but are they targeting the root cause of acne with that, I cannot say.

Excessive collagen production is a root cause for acne.

No. This is what we know:
Fraxel: once per month for 2-6 sessions, a more intense procedure that uses a laser to treat acne scars by stimulating collagen production deep below the skin.

Collagen production actually reduces acne scars.

A patient who is no longer breaking out with acne can still appear to have acne because of acne marks and scars that have been left behind by prior acne breakouts.

This is what we know:
Some of them helped but she was still getting a lot of acne - worse, some of the older acne was creating hyperpigmented dark spots on her face and leaving acne marks and scars.

We know that the situation isn't better if acne marks and scars are left behind. But does the person appear to have acne or just hyperpigmentation, I don't know. This isn't great, frankly, but it is the only viable option because the rest are far worse.

A combination of Isolaz, Fraxel, Microdermabrasion, and acne creams will cure Pam's case of acne.

No. we know that those are offered solutions. Will they work for Pam, we cannot say.

A blue laser that treats surface level bacteria can get rid of acne in Pam's case.

No blue laser mentioned.

Question 3.

3. For each of the following patients, select Yes if, based on the spa's assumptions, an appropriate treatment option exists in its product offering. Otherwise, select No.

Wedding bride wants to get rid of some acne scars on her face a few months before her wedding.

For acne scars, there is Fraxel. It takes a few months and the bride has a few months.
Select: YES

High school teenager got sun-burned while staying out in the sun too long without sunscreen.

There is nothing we know that treats sun-burn. The top or even the lower layer of the skin get burned. Is it treated? Is it removed? We have no idea. No treatment discussed talks about sun burn treatment.

Select: NO

High school senior is hoping to have a glowing face with a fresh new layer of skin in time for prom next week.

We have Microdermabrasion and acne creams for new layer of skin. Both can be used for next week.

For the third part, how do we know the treatments mentioned for a new layer of skin will take a week or less? Isn't it possible that it takes more than a week? Nothing related to it is mentioned in the passage.

Microdermabrasion is given to be a regular once in a month service to reveal new skin. The process itself cuts the dead skin and reveals new skin. There is no mention of it requiring 10 days or so. The acne creams mentioned applied daily also lead to new skin.
So as far as we can tell from the given info, there are options available for the senior. Both give new layer of skin and there is no reason to believe that they will not work in a week.

Hi Karishma,

In part 1, 3, how can we conclude that these treatments will be solving their problems in the provided timelines, when no exact info is provided in the stimulus about the effective duration of treatment?

Example in 1st part, question mentions that the bride has a few months before the wedding. The passage mentions that it takes anywhere between 2 and 6 months for treatment. So how can we be sure, that it will solve her problem for sure?

Similarly in 3rd part, patient needs the result in 1 week, while passage gives no indication on this.

Kindly help with this, if I'm having any conceptual gap here to solve this.

Thanks!

For part one of Q3 we are given that the patient has a few months for the treatment to work. The treatment takes 2-6 months and "a few" is anywhere from 3-6 so it's within the time frame. While it doesn't give an exact time frame (somewhat poor way of adding complexity) we can logically conclude that 2-6 months would be enough time.

For part of Q3 we are given that patient has a week for the treatment to work and would be prescribed the daily use cream. While the question doesn't tell us how long it takes for the cream to take effect, the fact that it is applied daily would make it more suitable for the patient rather than a once a month treatment.
