Susan is looking at her cell phone bill from the last 6 months. April’s bill was four times that of all the other bills. If the median amount due for a month was $32, what was the average amount due in a month during those six months?

(A) $32
(B) $48
(C) $53
(D) $80
(E) $128

Breaking Down the Info:

"April’s bill was four times that of all the other bills" implies that the rest of the 5 months have the same bill.

Then the median must be one of those months, and the rest of the 5 months have a bill of $32 each. April's bill must be 32*4 then.

Finally, the average would be \(\frac{32*5 + 32*4}{6} = 32 * \frac{3}{2} = 48\)

Answer: B

I don't entirely believe this is certain as the question mentions median. And the median can be April+ Any other month, or 2 other months excluding April. We don't know which 6 months are being discussed, hence, the issue. As the median is taken as the center value in a sorted set. Additonally, "April’s bill was four times that of all the other bills" - is this all the other bills combined or is it what you mentioned as all the other bills being of the same value.

The wording of the question is far from perfect; however, the solution provided matches the intended meaning. Locking this one.
