Since I finished college I have had a weird work experience due to visa issues: 10 months in IB Operations, 7 months in Commercial Banking Compliance, currently 2 years in Purchasing in the Automotive industry. My undergraduate was in Industrial Engineering, but I really don't enjoy my current role and don't see myself working as an engineer or working in a manufacturing company. I'm looking to do something more corporate/business related. I'm applying to top 25 MBA programs and I need to be clear and reasonable about my goals, do you guys think that trying to do Corporate Finance is a long shot? How hard would it be to break into Consulting (outside MBB) for someone like me? These two areas really spark my interest because of the business acumen and skills I can learn but I know very little what it takes to get a job (with an MBA)
Any thoughts are appreciated.
I think it is very doable. MBA is a big reason for switching industries and with some luck you can get a good internship that will help you land a good corporate finance or consulting job. You need to worry about your resume however, with all the moving around but it makes a good case for consulting and why you would succeed there. In any case, I would not be discouraged - definitely possible to get into Finance or Consulting - just need to demonstrate good math skills (high GMAT score will help too!).
Many schools have finance clubs/etc so you will be able to get additional experience, exposure, and hopefully some networking as the result of those. However, in reality a corporate finance jobs is probably one of the easiest to procure since it does not rate that high ... H1B can be a pain, however, with those since not all companies hire international applicants.
