If you're aspiring towards placement opportunities in one particular sector post MBA (say, IT and IT enabled services), is experience in that particular sector (pre-MBA) preferred by the recruiters?
Since most offers are made by IT and ITeS companies, can 'not having a background in IT' mean that you'll be left out of their recruitment exercise?
In short, can you switch your industry post MBA?

The short answer is that it depends on the company and industry. There are some industries where pre-MBA experience is strongly valued. Examples include private equity and real estate. There are other industries where pre-MBA experience is not needed. Investment banking and management consulting are two such examples where the prerequisites are limited or non-existent.
It MAY also depend on the MBA program you attend. Some companies and recruiters are more forgiving if you attend a top program. Fair or not, that has been noted by former MBA students.
If you considering making a career change or pivot to a sector in which you don't have experience, I would talk to current and former MBA students and professionals in your intended sector so you have an idea of whether an MBA can help close that gap and/or open up doors to make that transition possible.

All too often we read vague goals statements that show a candidate does not really know their future industry. Check LinkedIn to see where MBA graduates are going and talk to friends or former classmates who work in the space. Understand the industry’s career pathing. The more you know about your future industry, the more authentic your essays will sound as you begin to articulate your goals.
Making a personal tie to your future career can also help. As you begin to explain your career aspirations, think about whether there is a personal connection you have with this career. Remember your applications should explain who you are as a person and what makes you unique, so your career goals can demonstrate a personal fit, even if the professional one is not immediately apparent. This is the type of one-on-one storytelling we work on with our clients via our comprehensive packages.
