(A) plutonium > platinum > Taaffeite (Refutes main conclusion)
(B) Taaffeite > painite ;
___plutonium > platinum (Can be concluded)
(C) Taaffeite > painit = plutonium > platinum (Can be concluded)
(D) Taaffeite > painite > plutonium > platinum (Can be concluded)
(E) Taaffeite > painite > plutonium > platinum (Can be concluded)
Hence, Answer must be (A)

Official Explanation
Reading the question: we have some fragments of logical reasoning here. Alternatively, we can view them as mathematical equations expressed in words. We will write them as equations with variables:
T > Pain; and
Plu > Pla;
therefore: T > Pla
The most obvious way to add the missing piece is to establish Pain > Plu, connecting the two statements. That's answer choice (E). But this is an EXCEPT question, so that means (E) is out, not in. We go through the others. (A) says that Plu > T. That doesn't immediately seem to work, so we skip it. How about (B)? (B) gives T = Plu. Then we can substitute. (B) works and so it's out. (C) gives Pain = Plu. Again we can substitute and obtain success, so (C) is out. (D) says Pain > Pla. T is greater than something that is greater than Pla. So (D) works.
The correct answer is (A).
