I have seen people take the GMAT just to see how they do. I admire their pain tolerance but I also pity there wallet since they could just take a practice test. What is the main driver for taking a cold test?

Would be an interesting poll, though if you're on gmatclub you're more likely to be preparing for your first attempt. One reason could be a person needs a score as soon as possible/doesn't have the time right now to prep - and feels their strong background in standardized tests such as the SAT could "be enough" to get a decent score.

So in other words it sounds like gambling

I think it makes sense. People gamble with everything so why not with GMAT 😱

I guess people just want to see the test, and I guess people who take it well before they're ready have a similar motivation, but I think taking it two or three times before you have a good reason to believe you're ready is a mistake. It's super rare for a test-taker to have a lucky GMAT and score significantly higher than the test-taker's true level.

Yes, I agree, and for some people, taking that approach does work out.
